2011 - 2012

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Humpback Whales, Dugong …Great News

Like a truly irregular year in Egypt, with the demonstrations and a severe decline in the tourism the sea responds in a positive way. The last few weeks we have seen sharks and sharks aplenty. Oceanic white-tips which have not been seen much in the earlier part of this year are out swimming about with hammerheads following along.

An amazing sight were the two humpback whales who came to visit near Hurghada, on September 12th. An 8m long whale and a smaller believed to be her calf were cruising the Red Sea making a visit. It is not uncommon for humpbacks to swim in the Red Sea but it does not happen all that often; not even annually.

The next great and amazing gift, and this we witnessed personally, was the sighting of the Dugong on check-dive at Marsa Umm Rus this week. This large sea cow was just grazing along and greeting our divers saying “Welcome to the Red Sea.” It is always a joy to know that they are still around continuing to prosper. These Sirenians are unfortunately becoming rare sights in the Red Sea.

Blue Waves Party in Switzerland

We are starting a tradition, I think. The annual Blue Waves Party in September has gone and went and was once again a big success and a lot of fun thanks to all our friends and guests that attended. For starters we need to thank the weather for being lenient once again on us. We realize that the party has become not only a place for us to see all of you but also a great place for you to see all your dive buddies whom you maybe haven't seen since a past tour.

Thanks goes to out to all who attended and those who helped out setting up and cleaning up. Not least to be mentioned therein Fabio, Monika, Sabine, Silke, Ayman, my parents Heidi and Noldi and Gary who helped lifting those heavy tables at the end.

And now here a few photos from the event done mostly by our good friend Johnnie Moon but also from Silky and Ayman: >>> Picture Galery

Tiger is back on Blue Waves

Good news to all who know and remember our seaman Tiger. He was with us since day one and in a way being so young, he grew up on board. Well, he left us for awhile to discover how life is on land and is now back with us on board. Tiger missed life on Blue Waves and the life at sea. We are glad to have him back and welcome him back on board. See more about him here >>>

Missing out

We regret to inform you that another tour on Blue Waves has finished off and if you were not on board you are just simply missing out.

The tourist industry has really fell behind on sending tourist to the Red Sea and though we feel it too, we are glad sometime to not be out diving on the crowded. At the moment the sea is experiencing still the change of Spring to Summer and all the morays are out underway searching mates and nesting grounds. The water is a bit colder than usual; only 25C.  This keeps the sharks up in the sport diving range and not always fleeing in the deep to avoid the heat.

We had great dives at Daedalus island, Brothers and Sataya etc. At Daedalus a cleaner station was the main attraction, where a cleaner fish thought our ears were gills and kept trying to push his way into our brains. It was a startling but interesting experience, I must admit. The hammerheads were there with their gray reef friends as well. It was a lot of fun with great dives and really great people and like always sad when it’s over.

Proudly we present …  :-)

Wir haben endlich eine nigelnagelneue Nitrox Anlage auf unserer Blue Waves.Diese könnte 440l/p.m. mit 40% füllen ohne Probleme.

Start of the Tours 2011

Wow...that was truly something else. The renovations are complete and Blue Waves shines once again from her new polish. The year we took serious action upon all the woodwork and in addition the sanitation of the fresh- and wastewater tanks, not forgetting to mention the engine room as well. . New windows, new teak floors all redone during the Winter break.

Link to the photos: http://www.bluewaves.ch/photos/dry-dock-2011/

But now we are underway with great guests, mostly repeaters and good friends. To see how fun to all was take a glance here at our island trip and many other fun photos: http://www.bluewaves.ch/photos/march-may-2011/

Even though the tourism industry it is hard presently with so few tourists but therefore we had the opportunity to dive the Thistlegorn alone; yes, alone. Not another boat in sight.

Looking forward to many more tours.

Turmoil in Egypt and the Tours with Blue Waves

A sad but true event and hopefully this ends with a positive outcome. It was time for change and, for the Egyptians, to stand up and take charge of their political situation. The turmoil in the capital does not have much influence on our tours on the Red Sea. Though unfortunately many tourists are now unsure and in return many flights have been pushed to a later date or cancelled. We will go on business-as-usual starting with our first tour on March 17.  Diving underwater where it is silent and calm will keep our heads and flippers out of the media’s reach. Should anyone have any problems with a flight or questions regarding security issues please feel free to contact us.

Renovations of our baby “Blue Waves“

Today she will go back in the water, unfortunately quite a bit tardy. To be honest part of the delay is due to renovations as we found a nasty hitchhiker buried into our hull. The small holes he makes is about 4mm in size and with a boat of 30 meters long it was a bit of luck that we found him. This marine tubeworm had buried himself into our hull and made a nice set of canals through some of the hull that we now have replaced.

Then came the turmoil. Here we received notice that material sent for replacement to Cairo never arrived or was lost in transport. Who knows really? But our diligent crew got together and worked it out so that now everything could be finished. New pictures will follow in a few days. We will inform you again soon to show off Blue Waves’ new shine.

+++Start-up Tours – Who’s tempted?
On our start-up tour on March 17, it has many available spaces.
March 17 to 24, 2011, North Tour (wrecks).  See more details here: http://www.oceanwindow.ch/tauchen/tourdetail_e.php?tourID=79
March 24 to 31, 2011, Brothers Tour.  See the deatils here: http://www.oceanwindow.ch/tauchen/tourdetail_e.php?tourID=78

I am excited to begin the new season with friends onboard Blue Waves. :-)

Renovations of our baby “Blue Waves“

After our last tour over the New Year we drove the boat to Safaga and pulled her out of the water. There is tons to do. We are renovating like crazy. A lot of work but it is fun and while worth the effort to see her in shape and her shining hull sparkling once again. Here is a link to a few photos of the repair work. At the moment I am here in the frozen Switzerland to attend the exhibition so it will take awhile till I can update new ones. See the pictures >>>

Blue Waves Renovation Time

The hard work of preparing for leaving the salty sea and do some needed repairs are full in progress once again.  Now at present we are waiting for the dock throw out it lines and track and pull us on shore.  Here are a few pictures of the preparations.  Keep checking back here from time to time as we will be posting pictures as the work continues.  The cat, “Fireball,” is a new resident guest at my apartment in Hurghada. :-)

How careless people can be to a sensitive environment?!

On a recent tour “The Clean-Up Tour”, or so it became, we found some nice findings on the sea bottom.  This time it was battery cells. Not just one or two cells but some 15 to 20 of them; a true sign of intentional disposal.  These cells will discharge over time large amounts of cadmium, lead nickel and lithium, just to name a few most common elements. It never ceases to amaze me how careless people can be to a sensitive environment where they are presently vacationing.  Why go through all the trouble of flying there to see it in person if they anyway don’t care:  People like this should rent a movie and stay home!

Blue Waves cleans up - Thank you to my Crew!

While traveling along on a recent tour in the middle of the Red Sea our captain, Maher, suddenly slows the boat and stops the engines.  We were no where near our next destination and we couldn’t see any reef so everyone started to wonder what is going on.

As we watched the seamen prepare the zodiac for departure we really started to wonder. Then out in the distance we saw a white floating thing.  At that distance it could have been anything. As the zodiac approached it we saw that it was a large plastic tarp. We packed it onboard and disposed of it back at the harbor.

Blue Waves clean-up days occur actually such like this, we find something and pick it up and take it with us. So we are constantly actually doing clean up.

Plastics big or small can be a big danger by trapping animals or being swallowed. Well the huge one we found this time would at least not have been able to swallow but do other damage.

We are glad we do our part when we can.

Personaly... I am proud to have such a good Crew. :-)

Thanks to all,

Chris

Don’t be fooled. Dolphins are not always smiling.

Finally I am back in Hurghada. The last few days I was in much contact with Richard O'Barry and yes... he is coming to Egypt to help. I am very happy about that and also very much, that even Hepca is supporting his trip. Together I hope we get done a lot and can help the Dolphins which will get now at least moved to a bigger place.

Ric send me the following text and asked to get this information more around. So please red this text below. Attached I also add here further information from Hepca.

Not only I want to see those dolphins doing better but we need to fight against this planed Dolphinarium in Hurghada and every where in the world. I will soon publish a few more interesting information and will keep you up to date.

Greetings, Chris

Of Dolphins and Decency

by Richard O'Barry, Marine Mammal Specialist, Earth Island Institute.

In situations of great stress in captivity they (dolphins) have been known to commit suicide by starvation, battering against walls, or drowning.—The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th Edition 2001-05.

When you consider that dolphins and other whales have been around on this planet for at least 50 million years, compared with much less than a single million years for us human beings, you have to wonder how we got control so quickly over them.  They have larger brains than we have. They’re bigger and stronger, faster, sleeker and altogether more perfectly formed than we are.  And yet, just as we have come to dominate 30 per cent of the world (that which is above water) in the short time we’ve been around, we could say that dolphins and other whales are the dominate species in the other 70 percent, which is water.

The bottom line is that we’re both at the top in our separate worlds, cetaceans in their watery domain, we on land.  When we scan the horizon for similarities, we have a moment of recognition because we’re actually very much alike.  We’re both mammals, for instance, mammals of a high order for we’re both self-aware, and we’ve both adapted almost perfectly to the world we live in.  As mammals we both breathe air, mothers in both worlds suckle their young in loving family groups around which is woven a way of living that fosters social rules maintaining a balance like the golden mean of ancient Greece.

At least that’s true of dolphins and other whales.

Where did we go wrong?  What happened in our world to make so many of us rush with such abandon into the exploitation of our counterparts in the other 70 percent of the world?  Why do we capture these beautiful fellow creatures and make them objects of fun?  And oddly enough the most fun we seem to have is capturing them, pinning them up and making them pull us through the water, one after the other,.  Why would anyone who understood what was actually going on enjoy this?  How can we, who do understand what’s going on, tolerate it?  And how can those who exploit dolphins and other whales do so without a ripple of conscience, as if they had a right to?

Well, as we all know, the short answer is that we have a history of this.  You may recall that slavery was only recently put aside as an okay thing to do.  Almost certainly that happened because it was no longer economically feasible.  Indeed where it is feasible, as in enforced prostitution of children and things like that, it still goes on like crazy.  Maybe at the heart of all this is our sophisticated world-wide economic system whose goal is to maximize profits regardless of collateral damage.  But the history of slavery in general is a clue to how we can stop this travesty.  If we stop it from being profitable, it will go away.

The first so-called dolphinarium began in 1938 at Marine Studios in St. Augustine, Florida, USA.  Now there are scores of dolphinaria all over the world, and more all the time are being established.  If you could collect all the abuse to dolphins and other whales, the pain, the horror, frustration, the dolphin suicides, the cries for help—if you were to gather all these atrocities from over the years it would be like a thousand hells.

Most countries would not permit this abuse for the real reason they exist:  money.  Most countries have laws against cruelty to animals, laws that began early in the 19th Century.  But obviously these laws have a loophole because, despite all our efforts, displaying dolphins publicly for money is now a multi-billion dollar industry.  Hunters of dolphins, suppliers and shippers, marketers, park construction workers, trainers—this list goes on and on and they all cash in.  Some nations allow it because they’ve got bigger problems.  Some nations see nothing wrong with it.  The rest allow it for the wrong reason:  that it’s educational.  They say that many people would never get to see a dolphin except for the dolphinaria.  But what about all the people who will never see a snow leopard? saber-toothed tiger?  Or the do-do bird?  On and on.  Taken even at face value, their argument is a fraud, because these dolphinaria are not educational, they’re anti-educational.  They show not a dolphin in his own world but a trained dolphin, a dolphin trained to act like a clown, in our world.

And then they have the unmitigated gall, the chutzpah, to tell us, “Look!  See how they smile? They love doing tricks for us!”

Don’t be fooled.  Those dolphins are not smiling.  If one of those dolphins were to fall dead on the dock, he would still wear that look and it would still not be a smile.

It may be tempting to point out that we are not personally to blame for what is happening to dolphins and other whales. And that’s true.  We don’t personally capture them and put them in what to them are tiny torture chambers, and we don’t withhold food till they perform silly little acrobatic tricks to our liking. We’re not to blame, not a single one of us, in the same way we’re not to blame for the world’s murders, arsons, kidnappings and so on.  We’re not to blame because (1) we don’t personally do these things and (2) we’ve helped pass laws against them, laws with good stiff penalties that express our desire to make the world free from such abuse.  We pass laws against murder, kidnapping and all the rest not because of some abstraction about society or the rule of law, but because we’re sick of it.  We’ve had enough.  Just like now we’re revolted by those who capture dolphins in the wild and imprison them for the rest of their lives.

They capture dolphins in the wild but claim to replace them by letting them breed in captivity.  This too is a fraud.  Dolphins born in captivity never learn to catch a live fish in the wild and are unequipped to live there.

A lot of misguided talk surrounds another similarity between human beings and dolphins in captivity:  their committing suicide when stressed.  When dolphins in captivity are greatly stressed, they sometimes obviously feel the need to escape by whatever means.  This is a big problem because they don’t have guns or poison as we do in such circumstances.  What can they do?  Some of these dolphins batter themselves to death against the walls of their prison.  Others refuse to eat until they waste away and die.  Dolphins and other whales are not like any other mammal in the way they breathe.  While humans and all the other mammals breathe automatically, dolphins don’t have that automatic reflex; every breath they take is deliberate.  When human beings fall into deep water, we drown because we lose consciousness and then, when the automatic reflex kicks in, we breathe water.  Not so the dolphin.  The dolphin will kill himself by drowning if he deliberately breathes water, but, more likely, he dies for lack of oxygen in his blood caused by not breathing at all.  This suicide option the dolphin takes is another proof of his self-awareness, without which suicide would never even occur to him

If words alone, if logic, reason, facts and history were enough to destroy the dolphin industry that has warped our lives, they would be long gone now.  We need more than words, we need laws to stop them.  We know that it cannot be done overnight.  It may take many years.  We may even have to compromise a little.  But now is the time to start eliminating this evil or it will never happen in our lifetime.

Dolphinarium in Hurghada and our thougts

dolphins in the wild

Many of you may have already heard that a dolphinarium is planed in Hurghada. This upsetting and tragic event is even more horrifying as we learned that the animals to be kept are already being held in a filthy and extremely small confinement area in Mubarak 6 in Hurghada. Recent news, just discovered a few days ago, of this tragedy has led us to want to inform as many of you as possible of these events. The Red Sea Environmental agency HEPCA has released a letter stating that they are trying to act against this situation and even the Red Sea governorate has stated that they oppose of such doings. Attached is the letter from HEPCA.

We are truly disappointed of this information as we try to inform as many as possible against such actions. Chris is returning back to Egypt on Thursday and will see this firsthand and keep you informed. Please check back from time to time to hear of what is being done or what we can do to help stop this tragedy.

Our believes are that it’s one of the most wonderful experiences in life to see Dolphins in the wild in their natural habitat and swim with them and this is a very motivating experiences to want everyone to enjoy this. But we also know and have to respect that this can never be possible. But a dolphinarium is counterintuitive to the benefit of these wonderful creatures. If you are lucky you can enjoy it in the wild and if not please just live with it! It sounds hart but don’t let animals suffer for our desire.

Just if we avoid going to see dolphins, sharks, whales etc in captivity we can stop this tragic treatments of this amazing animals.

Thank you very much for all your support,

Chris and the Blue Waves – Ocean Window Team

Blue Waves Party 2010 in Switzerland

Sabine can't wait :-) Shopping was too much

This year’s party was again a great success and we hope everyone had as much fun as we did. All the guests had another chance to meet their dive buddies from prior tours and nurture their friendships. The short presentations were just enough to keep the mood in swing and complete the evening with some latest news and inspiring information. The weather was more than just pleasing and we were all very thankful for that. We want to take the chance here to say thanks to all our guests and friends for attending and add special thanks to Monika, Wendy, Thomas, Bruno, Rolf, Willi, Roger, Steffi, Ueli and Jonas for helping and keep the party on track. Last but not least a 'Thank You' to Brian for his interesting presentation.

We hope we can keep all things here rolling as usual and provide the best experiences to keep all our friends filling their lungs with our air when on the Red Sea.

Sunny Greetings from the Swiss Team Chris and Sabine

Bonding Gaps with Salt

Family in the Red Sea

On a recent tour, planned since over a year, aboard Blue Waves families from three different directions and cultures bonding on the Red Sea. The Blue Waves family welcomed their owner’s family (from Switzerland) and her husband’s family (from USA) with big smiles and open arms; truly a warm welcome.

Everyone helped everyone with snorkeling, card playing and chess to fill the days during sun light on and sun light off.

Blue Waves headed out to Sataya for planned days of seeing and playing with dolphins. All thought, as nature can be, chances might be on our side to see them play and glide gracefully. It didn’t take long until we saw them and could watch them play. It is quite a sight to watch these creatures play with each other and then snorkel up near them to watch in the natural environment. Blue Waves headed then over to Syul Island and did some fun snorkeling. Then we left for Wadi Gemal (Bird Island) and almost couldn’t sleep long in the early morning from the sound of all the birds; so much for the quiet sea. The snorkeling and diving was great here.

Between diving, snorkeling, eating, playing cards and partying and not to mention the walk in the sand all seemed to go by so fast even though we spent six days at sea. We now had to slowly get back to port and TVs (the World Cup) and the real world for us sea-lovers was back under our feet.

And then came Hansi ...

…truly a blast two weeks long with Hans Heider from Orca Travel (www.orca.de) and his guests. Have a look here at a few pictures >>>.

The dinner party on the upper deck, the relaxing times watching the sunsets on the front deck and everywhere a lot of fun and laughter. From so much laughter and fun we’ve forgotten to take some picutres. The muscle fatigue in our cheeks and tummies will serve as reminder. :-)

Most of all our special dives at brothers where due to an immense cloud overall in the water showing that spring fever was full underway by the corals. It was a cloud of sperm and eggs ejected by the corals at Brothers all searching the correct partner and we were right in the middle. Go little fellas, go. If only these divers wouldn’t be blocking your path. So we headed out to deeper waters, in the deep blue. Where the most of this cloudy mass was being swept away by the currents leaving for us a better visibility. Truly a sight to see.

Chris discovers with Blue Waves the beauty of the North

In the beginning and still even now, most tours requested are south tours. Much of the north tours I knew little about, except that about Daily-Boats around Hurghada and this I wanted to avoid. Truly there are many spots where the Daily-Boats and safari boats put up the diver -down flag, but I must say that the north really impressed me with some great sites and wrecks, such as the Thistlegorm or the Giannis D. Here both wrecks are astonishing not just for the stories can tell but for the variety of fish and coral that have taken up refuge upon their hulls. Not to mention Ras Mohammad with its breath-taking view above sea level and heart stopping plunge of a cliff-face below sea level, definitely a spot on your not to miss list. The fun ride between the many beautiful islands and the Hurghada harbor which serves as an entrance to the Egyptian city-life starts and ends north tours with an adventure. This year we will be from time to time in the north, July and August most certainly, and next year more often now.

Once again here are a few pictures from our past tours in April and May with incredible dives, fun and great guests sharing the typical life aboard Blue Waves. Link to the pictures >>>

New was that along with Blue Waves another boat, M/Y Liberty, chartered by us was side-by-side accompanying us the entire week.   As I was on board Liberty it was an exciting moment to watch my Blue Waves from another perspective and watch her glide through the water from a distance, actually a new and strange feeling. In the Picture Gallery are many pictures capturing these moments.

Also in the gallery are many pictures from our friend Sandro Krawinkler (www.divecorner.ch). He accompanied his guests on the full-charter on April 15th. It was a fun experience with great divers.

First Adventures Season 2010

blue waves Blue Waves starts the season

Blue Waves' first tours have come and gone, and she's glad to be back in the bay after getting battered with 40 knot(100kmh) winds the last two days at sea.

After an incredible calm and perfect shark week at Brothers, where we saw almost every type of shark the Red Sea has to offer; the second week had some cool dives with a manta and came in like a cool breeze and left like a tornado. See some pictures here >>>

Yipppyy, she’s swimming again.!!

Blue Waves on Dry Dock Blue Waves

Our Blue Waves got some renovations done and spent most of January with sand beneath her keel. Everything went great and we've done a few new things plus the usual maintenance to bring her back in "Ship-shape."
I had a big smile from relief as I saw her back at sea and for this I would like to say a big "Thank You" to the crew. Especially, Captain Maher Gomaa and Mechanic Hani Elsaid, who worked and assisted to see it all through, that all ran like clockwork (an Egyptian clock of course but none the less a clock) till punctual completion. Onboard will be a good chance for anyone to hear the handful of funny stories about how it all went.
Here are a few highlights from dry dock >>>

A safari among friends - Safari from November 12th, 2009

Friends; Steffi - Chris - Sabine Friends; Steffi - Chris - Sabine

To catch the last sun beams of the year together and to experience some exciting dives, this is the motivation to spend one's time on a southern tour in Egypt in November - on a safari among friends. If you don't have any, you make some - a traditionally easy task on 'Blue Waves'. So it came however, that some certainly had not made Poseidon as their friend. After a calm and warm first week of November, the sea became rough to the trip to St. Johns and back and conserved so many untanned faces as such.
Those who could recouperate from the mood swings of the god of the seas though, or were able to escape from them entirely, were compensated by all so picturesque dive sites. From the exciting 'caves' where underwater caverns with their winding turns were ablazed cathedral-like by the dancing light to the action-laden drift dive at 'Elphinstone' where a close encounter with a shark perfected the dive - there was everything for any taste. During our journey we were also escorted by a school of up to twenty dolphins at play.
This safari week stood under the, although little, farewell from our crew member and longtime friend Sabine who is about to leave for Australia for a couple of months. If you have no friends, make some - if you have friends, goodbyes are hard though...

Check out here a few pictures of this tour.

Erich Ritter and other Shark Tales

Oh how true that title can be. As everyone onboard learned from the famous shark researcher that the tales are what unfortunately give sharks their bad reputation. Erich Ritter's week long of seminars presented all about the instinct and body language as to how the game is played between sharks and humans. The shark expert motivates all who hear him speak to see sharks in a new light. Telling all onboard how to behave around sharks and what to look for in their behaviour and in the sharks, that tells of his intent. His great talks and inspiring passion for his work with sharks makes him a definite friend of Blue Waves. Rest assured we will support his work and try our best to get his message across to as many as possible. Be sure to check out his site and research centre in the Bahamas: www.sharkschool.com

Check out also a few pictures of the tour here.

Blue Waves Party in Switzerland

We had a blast and we hope you did too!?
On Friday, September 4th Ocean Window Ltd. had a Blue Waves party in Switzerland to show their appreciation to all their guests and friends over the past year. The response was tremendous with over 120 visitors and we were pleasingly surprised that all stuck it out even though the weather wasn't quite Egyptian. The party continued anyway as many just rushed between the tent and club house to pull their foods from the grills. Luckily as the seminars started, on Marine Biology and Technical Diving, all found space inside to listen. The Ocean Window Team wants to extend a very special thanks to all who came and especially to Stefi Pfister, Roger Sarbach and Heidi and Noldi Anderegg for all of the support that evening/night.

Whale Shark, White Socks and some more Impressions of the latest tours

Fun Group on Blue Waves one of the fun groups on Blue Waves

Just returning from an incredible tour with a whale shark, Blue Waves wants to take the time here to let all its fans know of what has been happening since its last stop in the diary.

Well the Blue Waves has got to enjoy some really fun tours including Tec Divers at Brothers and the Photo Workshop tours. The artists will soon enlighten us with their talents in an upcoming post.

The most recent tour with the marine biologist, Brian, had an incredible tour from start to finish. Along with the seminars about the sea and all its creatures were some fun dives aplenty. The motto for the week changed almost after every dive, but the white socks dance could not be left out in the end. Starting already on the second day they were greeted underwater by 15 dolphins and then on the next by tiny glass shrimps. Turtles and many baby triggers and a not to be forgotten sight of juvenile 3cm Emperor Angelfishes. But the greatest and best sighting of all was definitely the whale shark.

WHAT A TOUR!!! See some photos here:http://www.bluewaves.ch/photos/whale-shark-and-july-august-impressions/

It just keeps getting better and better!!!

Whale Shark playing with Blue Waves Whale Shark with Blue Waves

After the last entry where we spotted the rare dugong, Blue Waves got to enjoy a an absolutely amazing dive with a whale shark! After a late wake-up and late dive at Elphinstone Blue Waves's divers were one of only two groups who were able to witness this amazing creature. Not only see this almost 4.5m female whale shark, but the Blue Waves' divers were also the only ones who dove with her two additional times at 15m and 10m for more than 15 minutes.

It was a whale shark of a time!!!

The Dugong dropped by to say “Hello”

Dugong

It's been awhile since we've seen her smiling face but she showed up for a few dives and snorkels to watch on our latest tours. These lovely vulnerable marine mammals, of up to 3 meters long, are truly a sight to watch. Despite their 1,000 kg weight they are harmless and vegetarians. They live entirely off sea grass. If you're ever diving over a field of sea grass and see what seems like a dust cloud be assured a dugong is not far away.

This encounter with the lovely Dugong is just one of many highlights we had the last few tours. Every week we are on tour and experience so many breath taking moments... there is just not enough time to keep track of it and write it all in our Diary. But we will try to keep up on our memories and experiences more soon here.

Encounters with Dolphins

Maher and Chris snorkling with Dolphins Maher and Chris snorkling with Dolphins

With the beginning of summer comes the expansion of the warm thermo clines into the depths leading ocean's creatures to enjoy the warmth and start the copulating behaviours. Blue Waves and her guests were many times already immersed in the swarms of dolphins doing exactly that. They were incredibly playful, in more ways than one, and were so close and in such high numbers that it made it more than just a pleasure but a life's experience to be part of it. Not only were the dolphins up in numbers but the rest of the marine creatures was enjoying the warm waters as well, as we soon learned. Sharks were aplenty. Be sure to have a peek at Blue Waves picture ensemble from her past tours and the dolphin extravaganza!

Review of Rescue Diver Tour

Blue Waves Rescue Course Rescue student hard at work

After a week of strange weather and some rain (truly a surprise) all rescue divers successfully completed their training aboard Blue Waves. They were really put to the test with both waves and rain to fight against while pulling divers on board and saving lives. While at Dolphin Reef Blue Waves observed the large pod of around 50 Spinner dolphins swimming in the swallow 10 meter waters. Rocking at the surface at Elphinstone Blue Waves watched as all divers enjoyed the calm and current free underwater world. Be sure to check back if interested in joining the rescue course that will take place in 2010 on board Blue Waves. The next tour is already underway to St. Johns and already having a blast.

Our upcoming rescue diver tour will determine if the students will realize the difference when to throw the line and when to throw the rock. No but seriously we are looking forward to an eventful learning experience and in general a fun tour, especially for those who get to watch the students in training or who are being rescued. Those who are interested in making the rescue diver certification and would like to join the rescue diver week please send us an e-mail and look for an upcoming class.

Blue Waves @ Dry Dock

Blue Waves at Dry Dock

Already out of the water, Blue Waves is missing the salty floor beneath his hull.  Renovations are underway to refinish all the wood, inside and out, and to repair many of the doings that hard salt water sustains to boats on the Red Sea a year long.  Many new features will be added to bring him a head above the rest.  The first tours go out at end of February so be sure to check the Tour Plan for next year and keep checking back here to see the progress while at dry-dock. See here some pictures...

Christmas Tour 2008

Blue Waves and its Crew is always excited when it can make wishes come true.  While at Fury Shoals, on December 18-25, the last tour for this year, our honeymooners, and new divers, got to experience a dream first dive with 30 dolphins. The other guests, some soon regulars, celebrated Christmas away from their families this year but found on Blue Waves a new family with which to share their holiday cheer.  Lighting up the decks in Christmas ambiance ensured a cheery resonance from all aboard and allowed for easy motivation to sing Christmas songs and others. :-)

Blues Waves wishes all who were aboard and also those who weren't a happy holiday season and all the best in the new year.

Dive Course and our Honeymooners

What an experience!!  Remember the first time you ever dove; I do.  The cold water, the visibility was only 3 meters and the only thing I remember seeing was an old anchor.  Now  imagine this, our two new divers and honeymooners put their heads for the first time underwater in open waters and see not only 20 meters but 30 dolphins and this all in 24°C water!  If that doesn't say how great a Christmas wish and dream tour can come true then I'm not sure what will.  Heck, I even thought Santa Claus really exists after that dive and he is here warming up before the cold flight around the world.

Salt and Snow

Blue Waves coming back from last tour to it's home harbour

As the salt dries on Blue Waves' hull in Hurghada, after coming back from the latest trips to St. Johns, the team in Switzerland is spreading the dry salt over its snow covered driveways.

Now Blue Waves and its crew gets to relax from the stress for a couple weeks before heading out for the final tour this year over Christmas. The management in Switzerland however is busy planning the dry dock renovations and the next tours for 2009.

We are looking forward to seeing you aboard. :-)
